Verse 49 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 49 — a wall of sand

ਜਗ ਰਚਨਾ ਸਭ ਝੂਠ ਹੈ ਜਾਨਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥
jag rachnaa sabh jhooth hai jaan layho ray meet.
The world and its affairs are totally false; know this well, my friend.
ਕਹਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਥਿਰੁ ਨਾ ਰਹੈ ਜਿਉ ਬਾਲੂ ਕੀ ਭੀਤਿ ॥੪੯॥
kahi naanak thir naa rahai ji-o baaloo kee bheet. ||49||
Says Nanak, it is like a wall of sand; it shall not endure. ||49||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All the world's making is false; know this well, my friend.

Nanak says: it will not stay, like a wall made of sand.

The world is a wall of sand that the tide will smooth away.
The deeper layer

The world does not last, like a wall built of sand.

Jag rachnaa sabh jhooth hai: everything made in the world is false. Jhooth here means it does not last. Jaan layho ray meet: know it well, my friend.

Thir naa rahai: it will not stay. Ji-o baaloo kee bheet: like a wall of sand. Think of a sandcastle at the beach. However well it is built, the tide comes in and smooths it away.

A Question to Sit With

What is something steady you could build your inner home on, that would not wash away?
