Sikhism·Salok Mahalla 9·The Closing Saloks
Verse 52 of 57

Salok Mehlaa 9, Salok 52 — sing, and set down the heavy load

ਜੋ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਸੋ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਹੈ ਪਰੋ ਆਜੁ ਕੈ ਕਾਲਿ ॥
jo upji-o so binas hai paro aaj kai kaal.
Whatever has been created shall be destroyed; everyone shall perish, today or tomorrow.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਲੇ ਛਾਡਿ ਸਗਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ॥੫੨॥
naanak har gun gaa-ay lay chhaad sagal janjaal. ||52||
O Nanak, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and give up all other entanglements. ||52||

In plain words

Whatever has been born will pass away; everyone goes, today or tomorrow.

Nanak says: sing the praises of the One, and let go of all the other tangles.

Everything born completes its journey; so sing, and set down the loads you need not carry.
The deeper layer

Everything that begins also ends. So sing, and put down the heavy loads.

jo upji-o so binas hai — whatever is born will pass away. paro aaj kai kaal — today or tomorrow. This is the oldest rhythm there is, like day turning into night and back into day.

The verse does not stop there. har gun gaa-ay lay — sing the praises of the One. chhaad sagal janjaal — drop all the janjaal, the tangles and burdens. Think of taking off a heavy winter coat when the sun comes out. Singing, and letting go of worries and grudges, is a good way to spend our time.

A Question to Sit With

What is a heavy worry or grudge you could set down to walk a little lighter today?
