Says Nanak, now, the Lord is my Support; He will help me, as He did the elephant. ||53||

In plain words

My strength is gone, I am held in chains, and nothing I do helps at all.

Nanak says: now the One is my shelter. Be my help, as You were for the elephant in the old story.

When your own strength runs out, the One is the shelter to call on.
The deeper layer

When all my own strength is gone, the One is the shelter to turn to.

Bal chhutki-o banDhan paray: strength has slipped away and chains hold me. Kachhoo na hot upaa-ay: nothing I try works. The verse is marked dohraa, a kind of two-line verse.

Ab ot har: now the One is my shelter. Gaj ji-o hohu sahaa-ay: be my help, as for the elephant. In the old story of Gajendra, an elephant king was caught by a crocodile in a lake. When all his strength failed, he called on the Lord and was saved.

A Question to Sit With

When you have reached the end of what you can do alone, how does it feel to finally ask for help?
