The Cave of Calm

sunn nirantar deejai banDh.
Focused deep within, in perfect absorption,
udai na hansaa parhai na kanDh.
the soul-swan does not fly away, and the body-wall does not collapse.
sahj gufaa ghar jaanai saachaa.
Then, one knows that his true home is in the cave of intuitive poise.
naanak saachay bhaavai saachaa. ||16||
O Nanak, the True Lord loves those who are truthful. ||16||

In plain words

Hold steady deep within, in the stillness, and stay gathered there.

Then the swan of the soul does not fly off, and the wall of the body does not fall.

You come to know that your true home is the cave of calm inside.

Nanak says: the True One loves those who are true.

The cave worth finding is not in a mountain; it is the calm inside you.
The deeper layer

The cave worth finding is the calm inside you. Sunn is deep inner stillness, a yogi's word for the void, here a gathered quiet. In that stillness the soul-swan (hansaa) stays and does not fly off, and the body-wall (kandh) stands. Sahj gufaa is the cave of easy calm, inside you, not on a mountain.

A Question to Sit With

Where is the calmest place inside you?
