How the Impossible Becomes Possible

satgur kai janmay gavan mitaa-i-aa.
Born into the House of the True Guru, my wandering in reincarnation ended.
anhat raatay ih man laa-i-aa.
My mind is attached and attuned to the unstruck sound current.
mansaa aasaa sabad jalaa-ee.
Through the Word of the Shabad, my hopes and desires have been burnt away.
gurmukh jot nirantar paa-ee.
As Gurmukh, I found the Light deep within the nucleus of my self.
tarai gun maytay khaa-ee-ai saar.
Eradicating the three qualities, one eats iron.
naanak taaray taaranhaar. ||20||
O Nanak, the Emancipator emancipates. ||20||

In plain words

Born into the True Guru's house, my wandering from birth to birth came to an end.

My mind is tuned to the music no one plays, the unstruck sound within.

The Word burned away my hopes and wants.

Facing the Guru, I found the Light deep inside.

Wipe out the three pulls of the mind (laziness, restlessness, and calm goodness), and you chew iron.

Nanak says: the One who carries across carries us across.

The impossible task gets done not by force, but when ego quietly burns away.
The deeper layer

The iron gets chewed when the ego burns away. Anhat is the unstruck sound, an inner music heard in stillness. The tarai gun are the three pulls that move the ordinary mind. Chewing iron, mastering the ego, is done not by brute force but by grace burning away craving; taaray taaranhaar, the One who carries across, does the carrying.

A Question to Sit With

What melts away when you stop feeding it?
