In plain words

Without the Guru, there is only pitch darkness. Without the Shabad, understanding is not obtained.

Through the Guru's Teachings, you shall be enlightened. Remain absorbed in the Love of the True Lord.

Death does not go there. Your light shall merge with the Light.

Where the light merges with the Light, death has no jurisdiction — it cannot take what has already given itself.
The deeper layer

Andhkaar (pitch darkness) without the Guru — not just difficulty, but complete absence of the navigational light. The darkness of not knowing which way to turn, which direction is home, what the purpose of the journey is.

'Your light shall merge with the Light' — jot samet jot samaaie — the soul's light (individual consciousness) merging with the divine Light (cosmic consciousness). The drop returns to the ocean. Death has no jurisdiction in that merging: it cannot take what has already given itself.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean for your light to merge with the Light — to give yourself so completely to the divine that there is no longer a separate 'you' for death to take?
