One Who Contemplates This Jewel Day and Night Reaps New Profits
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
One who thinks about this Jewel and weighs its worth, day and night, earns new profits.
He finds the merchandise within his own home, and departs after arranging his affairs.
So trade with the true traders, and as Gurmukh, contemplate God.
This one shows the trader who got it right: he found the jewel at home.
Laahaa ahinis na-otanaa: day and night, he earns fresh profit. How? Parkhay ratan veechaar: he looks closely at the jewel and thinks about it. The jewel is the Name, the One's presence inside.
Vasat lahai ghar aapnai: he finds the goods in his own home. Chalai kaaraj saar: then he leaves this world with his work done. That is a full life, lived well. The inner trade is finished. His affairs of the spirit are in order. So when it's time to go, he leaves calmly instead of full of regret. Picture a student who has packed her bag the night before. When the bus comes, she just walks out the door.
Vanjaari-aa si-o vanaj kar: trade with the true traders. Find people who also deal in the real treasure. That place is the Saadh Sangat, the company of good, God-loving people. It is the market where true traders meet. There, as a gurmukh, someone who faces the Guru, you think about God.
What would it mean to 'arrange your affairs' spiritually before departure — to have your inner life in order in a way that you could leave satisfied?
