Upon that highest place of beauty stands the Mansion of the Lord.
By true actions this human body is gained. And the door inside us, which leads to the Beloved's Mansion, is found.
The Gurmukhs, who face the Guru, train their minds to think on the Lord, the Highest Soul.
This one says the way to the One's home runs through this body and this life.
Oocha-o thaan suhaavanaa oopar mahal muraar — on a high and lovely place stands the Lord's mansion. Sikhs sometimes call this the Realm of Truth. It is not a far-off place you go after you die. It is a way of being awake, reached through the body, in this life.
Sach karnee day paa-ee-ai — by living truly, this human body is gained. Gurbani treats a human life as a rare gift. It is the one vehicle in which a person can come to know the One. So being born is a chance, not a burden.
And the door is inside. Think of looking all over the house for your glasses when they're on your head. The mansion's door is within you.
Gurmukh man samjaa-ee-ai — the Gurmukh, the one who faces the Guru, trains the mind. Like a coach who helps you practice the same move until it feels natural, they teach the mind to keep thinking on the One.
What does it mean to you that you were born human, in this time, in this place? Does it feel like luck, or like something more?
