Sikhism·Siree Raag·Ashtapadee 11
Verse 7 of 11

The Creator's Plan Is the One That Comes to Pass

ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਵਣੀ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
manmukh ganat ganaavanee kartaa karay so ho-ay.
The self-willed manmukhs make their calculations and plans, but only the actions of the Creator come to pass.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਨਾ ਪਵੈ ਜੇ ਲੋਚੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
taa kee keemat naa pavai jay lochai sabh ko-ay.
His Value cannot be estimated, even though everyone may wish to do so.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ਸਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
gurmat ho-ay ta paa-ee-ai sach milai sukh ho-ay. ||6||
Through the Guru's Teachings, it is revealed. Meeting with the True One, peace is found. ||6||

In plain words

The self-centered mind calculates and plans — but only what the Creator wills actually happens.

No one can estimate the Lord's value, even if everyone in the world wishes to.

Through the Guru's teaching, it is understood. When you meet the True One, peace arrives.

All the manmukh's calculations add up to nothing — only what the Creator wills comes to pass, and His value cannot be estimated.
The deeper layer

Manmukh ganat ganavani — the manmukh makes ganat (calculations, estimates, plans). This is the ego's characteristic activity: trying to figure out how to manage, control, predict, and optimize. And the result? Kartaa karay so ho-ay — what the Creator does is what comes to pass. All the calculations come to nothing that overrides the divine will. This is not fatalism; it is the recognition of what is actually in your hands and what is not.

Keema-t naa pavai — His value cannot be estimated. The word keema-t (price, value, worth) appears throughout the merchant metaphors in Siree Raag: merchants estimate the value of goods, calculate profits, assess risk. God's value exceeds all estimation. You cannot set a price on the One. You cannot make a fair trade for the Name. It is given, not purchased.

Gurmat ho-ay ta paa-ee-ai, sach milai sukh ho-ay — through the Guru's teachings, it is found; meeting with the True One, peace is had. Not calculated, not reasoned, not estimated — found, through the Guru. The manmukh's error is thinking the divine is something you can figure out. The Gurmukh's discovery is that the divine meets you when you stop calculating and start receiving.

A Question to Sit With

Where in your life are you calculating and planning something that is ultimately not yours to control — and what would it feel like to release it?
