Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
I praise the Name with love. Through the Guru's Word, contentment has come.
Whatever you can see will pass away. Don't cling to this false show.
You are a traveler making a journey. Every day, watch the caravan departing.
Naam saalaahee rang si-o, gur kai sabad santokh — I praise the Naam with love (rang — color, joy, the permanent dye) and contentment comes through the Guru's Shabad. After the craving of Pauri 0, contentment (santokh) appears here — and it is not suppression of desire, it is fulfillment through the right object.
Jo deesai so chalsee, koorhaa moh na vekh — whatever is seen shall pass away, so do not be attached to this false show. Koorrha (false, unreal) — the world's show is not evil, but it is koorhaa: it doesn't last. The objects of craving (trishna) are all in this category. Seeing them clearly as passing is the beginning of release.
Vaat vataa-oo aai-aa, nit chaldaa saath daykh — like a traveler in his travels, you have come; behold the caravan leaving each day. The vataa-oo (traveler, wayfarer) is someone who is not at home — they are on the road, passing through. This body, this life, this world are the road, not the destination. And every day, the caravan of those leaving (chaldaa saath) departs — not abstractly, but in the deaths and departures that are part of every life. Watch them. Let them teach you what to hold lightly.
What would change about how you are living if you genuinely felt yourself to be a traveler passing through, rather than a resident building a permanent life here?
