In plain words

By God's grace, the Gurmukh practices devotion. Without the Guru, there is no devotional worship — none at all.

One who merges their own self into the Lord understands this — and through that understanding, becomes pure.

The Dear Lord is True, and True is the Word of His teaching. Through the Word, Union with Him is obtained.

By God's grace, the Gurmukh can practice devotion — without the Guru, there is no devotional worship at all.
The deeper layer

Parabh ki-aa kari-aa, gur parsaad bhagat kar — by God's grace (parsaad), the Gurmukh practices devotion (bhagat). The opening establishes the governing principle of this ashtapadee and of Guru Amar Das's teaching across the GGS: grace precedes practice. The Gurmukh does not arrive at devotion through their own striving; the grace of God through the Guru makes the devotion possible. Bin gur bhagat na ho-ay — without the Guru, there is no devotional worship. Period.

This is not pessimism about human effort — it is precision about the sequence. Effort matters, but effort alone cannot cross the gap. The Guru is the bridge. The grace that flows through the Guru is what makes bhakti (devotional love) possible rather than merely performative.

Aapai aap milaa-ay bujhai, so jan nirmal ho-ay — one who merges (milaa-ay) their own self (aap) into Him understands, and so becomes pure (nirmal). The merging of the self into the divine is the act of understanding — not a conclusion you reach intellectually and then act on, but a simultaneous event: understanding is the merging. And the result is purity — not moral perfection but the removal of the mayl (filth) of ego that has been coating the soul.

Prabh saachaa saachee bani, sabad milai sukh ho-ay — the Dear Lord is True (saachaa), and True is His Bani (the divine Word/teaching); through the Shabad, union and peace are obtained. The chain: True Lord → True Bani → True Shabad → union → peace. Each link is the same truth at a different level.

A Question to Sit With

What is the difference between going through the motions of a practice and genuinely being moved by it — and what makes the difference?
