Blessed Is the Face Anointed with the Word

ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਬਾਦਿ ਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥
sabh ras bhogan baad heh sabh seegaar vikaar.
Her enjoyment of all pleasures is futile, and all her decorations are corrupt.
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੇਦੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿ ॥
jab lag sabad na bhaydee-ai ki-o sohai gurdu-aar.
Until she has been pierced through with the Shabad, how can she look beautiful at Guru's Gate?
ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੫॥੧੩॥
naanak Dhan suhaaganee jin sah naal pi-aar. ||5||13||
O Nanak, blessed is that fortunate bride, who is in love with her Husband Lord. ||5||13||

In plain words

Her enjoyment of all pleasures is futile, and all her decorations are hollow, until she has been pierced through with the word of the teaching.

The face that has been reached by the word — that face is recognized and welcomed at the gate.

O Nanak, blessed is that woman — that soul — who knows her Husband Lord. She alone is the truly beautiful one.

The beauty that is recognized at the deepest gate is the beauty of a soul that has been changed by truth.
The deeper layer

The closing pauri resolves the discarded-bride image: the face that is truly beautiful is the one "pierced through" by the Shabad. This is the inner transformation — not the outer adornment — that constitutes genuine beauty in Gurbani's aesthetic.

The Gurmukhi word for "pierced" (vedhee) carries the same root as the Sanskrit veda — to know, to pierce through to the truth. Being pierced by the Shabad is being deeply, permanently changed by the teaching.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to you to be genuinely beautiful — not in looks, but in character? What does that look like in someone you admire?
