Meeting With the True Guru, They Receive the Fruits of Their Destiny
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Meeting with the True Guru, they receive the fruits of their destiny.
Egotism is driven out from within.
The pain of evil-mindedness is eliminated — and good fortune comes and shines radiantly from their foreheads.
Satgur milai, phal paa-i-aa — meeting the True Guru, the fruit (phal) is obtained. The fruit of the tree that was planted across lifetimes of accumulated orientation — the purbali karma of Pauri8 — is received upon meeting the True Guru. The Guru-meeting is the moment of fruiting.
Haumai vikaar gavaa-i-aa — egotism (haumai) and its corruptions (vikaar — vices, corruptions, negative qualities) are driven away (gavaa-i-aa — caused to leave, expelled). The first thing that happens when the True Guru is met: haumai goes. Not gradually, not through discipline alone, but as a result of the meeting itself. The Guru's presence displaces what ego occupies.
Dukh-u miti-aa, sukh-u aai-aa, bhaag-u maat-hai pargasiaa — pain (dukh) is erased (miti-aa); peace (sukh) arrives (aai-aa); good fortune (bhaag-u) shines radiantly (pargasiaa — illuminated, lit up) from their foreheads (maat-hai). In Indian tradition, good fortune is visible in the radiance of the face — particularly the forehead. The sohaag (the mark of the blessed bride) is a visible radiance. Meeting the Guru produces that visible radiance: the soul's fortune becomes manifest.
Have you ever met a person in whose presence something in you — some anxiety or pretense or tightness — simply dissolved? What was it about them?
