Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Meeting with the Guru, I recognize only the One Lord.
In my consciousness, I do not know of any other account.
The Lord has assigned one task to me — as it pleases Him, I perform it.
Gur miliai Ik jaan-ii-aa — meeting the Guru (gur miliai), I have come to know only the One (ik jaan-ii-aa). Before the Guru-meeting, consciousness was dispersed across many accounts, many loyalties, many fears and desires. After: only the One. Not because other things ceased to exist but because they are now seen in relation to the One and not as ends in themselves.
Ant-ar-i mann-i na bhi-aa avar koi-aa — in my mind (ant-ar-i mann-i) I do not know (na bhi-aa — there is not) any other account (avar koi-aa — another, a second one). The interior simplification: where the mind once held many competing accounts (my reputation, my family's welfare, my desires, my fears), now there is only the One. Not willful suppression — the other accounts simply don't have the same hold.
Jis bhaaviaa, tis-u kaar kamaaiaa — as it pleases Him (jis bhaaviaa), I perform that task (kaar kamaaiaa). The single task assigned by the Lord, performed in the Lord's pleasure. Not one task among many — the one task that is the Lord's assignment. And the orientation: not "let me figure out the best strategy" but "as it pleases Him, I do it." The ego that planned and strategized has been replaced by the servant who listens.
What would it look like to have a single clear orientation in your life — one 'task' that everything else organizes around? Do you have that? What is it?
