Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Serving the True Guru, peace is found. The True Name is the Treasure of Excellence.
Follow the Guru's teachings and recognize your own self — the Lord's Light shines within.
The true ones practice Truth — greatness belongs to the Great Lord, not to the self.
Body, soul, everything belongs to Him. Offer your prayers to Him.
You can do all the chanting and austerities and self-discipline in the world — but without the Name, life is useless.
Through the Guru's teachings the Name is obtained. The manmukh wastes away in attachment.
Lord, protect me. Nanak is Your servant.
"Recognize your own self"
Gur updesh sach āp pachān — "follow the Guru's Teachings and recognize your own self." The Guru's teaching leads to self-recognition — not to knowledge of doctrine or theology, but to genuine recognition of what the self actually is. This is the tradition's deepest claim about what the Guru gives: not information about the divine but the capacity to see yourself clearly, and through that seeing, to find the divine that was always there inside.
Without the Name, all austerity is useless
Ja p tā ji p vichāre, bin nāmai sabh nirārth — "you may practice chanting, penance and austere self-discipline within your mind, but without the Name, life is useless." The Vaar keeps returning to this: the practices themselves (chanting, austerity, discipline) are not enough. They can be preparations, but without the Name as the living substance, they generate nothing permanent.
"Nanak is Your servant"
Āpe rakh māhu har, Nānak dās — "please protect me by the Pleasure of Your Will. Nanak is Your slave." The Shalok closes not with a teaching point but with a position: Nanak as servant. Not as teacher, not as Guru, not as knower — as servant. This is Guru Amar Das quoting the voice of the first Guru (Nanak) as one who is dependent, not self-sufficient. The Guru's authority comes from this dependence, not despite it.
*What does it mean to 'recognize yourself'? Have you ever had a moment where you suddenly understood something about who you actually are? What was that like?*
