Someone full of deceit who calls himself a devotee will never reach the Supreme Lord through hypocrisy. The gap between performance and reality cannot be bridged from the outside.
He slanders others and pollutes himself with his own filth. Outside he washes off the dirt — inside the impurity stays.
He argues with the Sat Sangat — the genuine community of seekers. Day and night he suffers, caught in duality.
He doesn't remember the Lord's Name but performs all kinds of rituals. What was destined cannot be erased.
Without serving the True Guru, liberation is not obtained.
Hypocrisy as the central failure
The Shalok describes three specific characteristics of the hypocritical devotee:
1. Outward washing, inward dirt — bāhri dhove, man kī jhuṭh na jāe — "Outwardly, he washes off the filth, but the impurity of his mind does not go away." The gap between external purification and internal state is the defining feature of spiritual hypocrisy.
2. Arguing with the Sat Sangat — satt sangat nāl bole bol — "He argues with the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation." This is diagnostic: the ego argues with genuine seekers because their presence is threatening. The hypocrite is comfortable with the unaware but uncomfortable with the truly aware.
3. Ritual without Naam — Har nāmu na japai, karam karay bahutere — "He does not remember the Name of the Lord, but still, he performs all sorts of empty rituals." The sequence is inverted: the Naam should come first and the rituals emerge from it. Without the Naam, the rituals are performance.
"What is pre-ordained cannot be erased"
Likhā likhi'ā mit na sakī'ai — "that which is pre-ordained cannot be erased." Even the hypocrite's condition is within the Lord's ordaining. The solution is still the same: serve the True Guru. There is no shortcut around the interior work.
*Is there something you do that looks good from the outside but doesn't feel genuine from the inside? What would it take to make those two the same?*
