In plain words

The Lord dwells in every single heart — so how do you find Him? If He is already everywhere, why does finding Him require anything?

By meeting the Guru — the Perfect Teacher — the Lord comes to live inside your conscious mind. Not just somewhere out there, but in your actual awareness.

The Naam becomes your food, your foundation, everything you stand on. From the Lord's Name, understanding comes.

My faith is in the Name. The Name is my dignity and my honor.

Nanak meditates on the Name and is dyed in the deep crimson color of the Lord's love.

The Lord is in every heart but must still be found — the Guru makes the all-present Lord perceptible.
The deeper layer

The omnipresence paradox

Sabhnā ghati rami'ā so'e, so har sadā dhiā'ī'ai — "He permeates each and every heart — so meditate on that Lord forever." The paradox: if He permeates everyone, why must we seek? Why the instruction to meditate?

The Guru tradition's answer is contained in the next line: the Lord permeates every heart, but this is not the same as the Lord dwelling in the conscious mind. Omnipresence and awareness of that presence are different things. The Guru's function is to make the all-present Lord perceptible to the aware mind. This is why the Guru is needed even by someone who theoretically believes the Lord is everywhere.

"Dyed in the deep crimson color"

Rang lāgā ati lāl — "he is dyed in the deep crimson color of the Lord's Love." Rang is one of the key words of Siree Raag — color, hue, love. To be dyed in the Lord's color is to be saturated in the divine's presence until your own color changes. The crimson (lāl) is the color of deep love, passion, devotion. The merchant who has traded in the Name has come home dyed in it.

The Name as food

Nāmu merā ādhāru — "the Naam is my Support and Sustenance." The Name as nourishment: not metaphorically but structurally. The soul that lives in the Name does not need the other supports — status, reputation, social standing — in the same way. The Name provides what those things were supposed to provide but couldn't.

A Question to Sit With

*Have you ever been told something was right in front of you that you couldn't see — and then suddenly you could? What changed? Was it the thing, or your perception of it?*
