Kabir: How Can People Understand?

ਐਸਾ ਤੈਂ ਜਗੁ ਭਰਮਿ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
aisaa taiN jag bharam laa-i-aa.
You have misled the world so deeply in doubt.
ਕੈਸੇ ਬੂਝੈ ਜਬ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaisay boojhai jab mohi-aa hai maa-i-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
How can people understand You, when they are entranced by Maya? ||1||Pause||

In plain words

This is the pause — the refrain — in Kabir's song. He stops telling the story and speaks directly to God.

He says: 'You have let the world get so confused, so wrapped up in Maya, that nobody can see You clearly. How are we supposed to find You when You're hiding behind all this?'

Notice that Kabir is not angry. He is asking a real question. And he doesn't pretend he has the answer. He just asks: how?

This is one of the most honest prayers in the whole GGS — not 'I figured it out,' but 'I genuinely don't know how anyone finds You in all this fog.'

Even Kabir looks at the confusion of the world and has to ask God directly: how is anyone supposed to find You?
The deeper layer

The rahao in Kabir's compositions often contains the sharpest theological move. Here it is: Maya is God's own doing. The doubt the world lives in is not a failure of the world — it is the condition God set. The fog was created by the same One who is hidden within it. This is not a complaint; it is a recognition of the fundamental paradox of spiritual life: You created the conditions that make You hard to find, and now You ask us to find You. Kabir's 'how?' does not demand an answer. It opens the space of genuine seeking — which may be the only real answer.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt like the world was designed to make it hard to think about God? What would it mean to keep seeking anyway?
