Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
This foolish mind is greedy. And through greed, it becomes even more attached to greed.
The ill-minded ones who turn away are not soaked in the Word. They keep coming and going.
One who meets the Holy True Guru finds the treasure of all good qualities.
This verse says greed is a strange hunger: the more you feed it, the hungrier it gets.
Ayhu mano moorakh lobhee-aa — this foolish mind is greedy. Lobhay lagaa lobhaan — through greed, it gets even more stuck on greed.
Think of scrolling on a phone. One more video, then one more. Each one seems like it will be enough, but it only makes you want the next. Feeding the wanting does not fill it up. It makes it bigger.
Sabad na bheejai saaktaa — the saakat, the person who has turned away from the One, is not soaked in the Word, the Shabad. Durmat aavan jaan — with a mixed-up mind, they keep coming and going. In Gurbani, this coming and going is the cycle of birth and death. It also shows up every day as a loop: want, get, lose, want again.
The way out is not just trying harder. Saadhoo satgur jay milai — if you meet the Holy True Guru, taa paa-ee-ai gunee niDhaan — you find the treasure of all good qualities. The Guru carries what the greedy mind was really hungry for all along.
Is there something you've tried to get more and more of that never quite satisfied? What were you actually hungry for?
