Verse 6 of 6

The Balanced Mind Dwells in Its True Home

ਮਨੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ਘਰਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਚ ਭੈ ਰਾਤਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
man bairaagee ghar vasai sach bhai raataa ho-ay.
If the mind becomes balanced and detached, and comes to dwell in its own true home, imbued with the Fear of God,
ਗਿਆਨ ਮਹਾਰਸੁ ਭੋਗਵੈ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਭੂਖ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
gi-aan mahaaras bhogvai baahurh bhookh na ho-ay.
then it enjoys the essence of supreme spiritual wisdom; it shall never feel hunger again.
ਨਾਨਕ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੁ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥੧੮॥
naanak ih man maar mil bhee fir dukh na ho-ay. ||5||18||
O Nanak, conquer and subdue this mind; meet with the Lord, and you shall never again suffer in pain. ||5||18||

In plain words

If the mind becomes balanced and detached — settled into its own true home, saturated with deep reverence — then it enjoys the highest wisdom.

It shall never feel hunger again. It shall know no pain.

O Nanak, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the mind becomes balanced. And in that balance, it finally arrives.

The balanced mind — settled in its own true home — is not indifferent, it is complete.
The deeper layer

The closing pauri describes the sahaj (balanced, effortless, natural) state — the deepest resting place of the mind. Sahaj is not achieved through effort; it is revealed when effort ceases. The mind in sahaj feels neither the hunger of desire nor the pain of loss.

"The mind becomes balanced through the Guru's Shabad" — the specific technology. Not will, not ritual, not social performance — but the Shabad, the living word of the teaching, is what produces sahaj.

A Question to Sit With

What does 'feeling balanced' mean to you? Not just calm, but genuinely settled? When do you feel that, even briefly?
