When Light Merges into Light

ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਈਐ ਸੁਰਤੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ॥
jotee jot milaa-ee-ai surtee surat sanjog.
When one's light merges into the Light, and one's intuitive consciousness is joined with the Intuitive Consciousness,
ਹਿੰਸਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਗਤੁ ਗਏ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਹਸਾ ਸੋਗੁ ॥
hinsaa ha-umai gat ga-ay naahee sahsaa sog.
then one's cruel and violent instincts and egotism depart, and skepticism and sorrow are taken away.
gurmukh jis har man vasai tis maylay gur sanjog. ||2||
The Lord abides within the mind of the Gurmukh, who merges in the Lord's Union, through the Guru. ||2||

In plain words

When my light joins the Light, when my mind joins His Mind,

then cruelty and pride go away. Doubt and sorrow are taken away.

The Lord lives in the mind of the one who follows the Guru. The Guru joins that one with Him.

When your light merges with the Light, what you thought you were doesn't disappear — it expands beyond measure.
The deeper layer

This line says: when our small light joins the great Light, cruelty, pride, doubt and sadness fall away.

Jotee jot milaa-ee-ai: our jot, our light, is joined with the Light of God. Surtee surat sanjog: our surat, our awareness, is joined with His Awareness.

Picture a candle flame held up to a bonfire. The little flame does not vanish. It becomes part of something much bigger and brighter.

Then comes what leaves. Hinsaa is cruelty, wanting to hurt. Ha-umai is ego, the proud "me first" voice inside us. Sahsaa is doubt and worry. Sog is sorrow.

They are not pushed down by force. They simply have nothing left to stand on. Ego builds a wall between "me" and everyone else. When that wall comes down, the ground these feelings grew in is gone.

Gurmukh jis har man vasai: the Gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru and follows the Guru's way. The Lord lives in that person's mind. The Guru brings about this joining.

A Question to Sit With

Has there ever been a moment when you felt your sense of being separate — separate from others, from nature, from something larger — briefly disappear? What was that like?
