You are wasting this life in the pride of wealth and the splendor of beauty. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Do not think your deepest connection is obtained by mere words.

You are wasting this life in the pride of wealth and the shimmering surface of beauty.

You cannot speak your way to the oneness — at some point, the words have to become a life.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. It says you can't reach the One just by talking.

Mat jaan seh galee paa-i-aa: don't think the Husband, the One, is found by mere words. This is one of Gurbani's clearest warnings against putting on a spiritual show. You can't talk your way to the One. You have to become what you say. Think of a kid who talks all day about being a great footballer but never goes to practice.

Maal kai maanai roop kee sobhaa: the pride of money and the shine of good looks. These are the two most common distractions everywhere: what you own and how you look. For many people, these become the whole point of life. It bidhee janam gavaa-i-aa: this is how a precious life gets wasted.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a difference between knowing what you should be and actually being it? What's in the gap between those two things?
