Without the Oil, the Lamp Cannot Be Lit

ਬਿਨੁ ਤੇਲ ਦੀਵਾ ਕਿਉ ਜਲੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

Without the oil, how can the lamp be lit? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Without the oil, the lamp cannot be lit.

One ingredient. Missing. And the whole mechanism fails to do what it was built to do.

What is the oil in your life — the essential ingredient that, without it, you are a wick without flame?

You have the wick and the lamp — the oil is what you've been missing.
The deeper layer

The rahao is the sparest verse in this section: tel binaa jugnoo kirpaan — without oil, the lamp is a wick without flame. The image is completely simple and completely precise.

The question it raises is immediate and personal: what is your oil? What is the essential ingredient without which you go through the motions of life without actually burning?

The following pauris will identify the oil specifically — prayer, truth, understanding. But the rahao leaves the question open for the listener to sit with.

A Question to Sit With

What is the essential ingredient in your life that, when it's present, makes everything else work? And when it's absent, nothing quite catches?
