Sikhism·Siree Raag·Shabad 4
Verse 5 of 5

Wisdom Lives in the Heart That Holds the Name

ਤਿਨ ਮਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਪਤਿ ਤਿਨ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਜਿਨ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
tin mat tin pat tin Dhan palai jin hirdai rahi-aa samaa-ay.
Wisdom, honor and wealth are in the laps of those whose hearts remain permeated with the Lord.
ਤਿਨ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਅਵਰ ਸੁਆਲਿਉ ਕਾਇ ॥
tin kaa ki-aa salaahnaa avar su-aali-o kaa-ay.
What praise can be offered to them? What other adornments can be bestowed upon them?
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਦਰੀ ਬਾਹਰੇ ਰਾਚਹਿ ਦਾਨਿ ਨ ਨਾਇ ॥੪॥੪॥
naanak nadree baahray raacheh daan na naa-ay. ||4||4||
O Nanak, those who lack the Lord's Glance of Grace cherish neither charity nor the Lord's Name. ||4||4||

In plain words

Wisdom, honor, and real wealth — these live in the hearts of people who are saturated with the oneness.

What praise can you add to them? What decoration can you put on what is already whole?

Those who have this connection — they have everything. And everyone can see it, even if they can't name what they're seeing.

The person whose heart holds the Name needs no decoration — their completeness is its own adornment.
The deeper layer

This closing pauri turns from the ugly inner habits described at the start of the shabad to their opposite: the person whose heart holds the Name. Everything that greed, falsehood, and anger destroy, this connection restores.

Guru Nanak asks: what more can you add to someone who is already complete? The question is rhetorical — nothing. The person aligned with the oneness doesn't need adornment, because they carry their own light.

A Question to Sit With

Have you met someone who just had something about them — a quality you couldn't quite name — that made you feel peaceful in their presence? What do you think that was?
