In plain words

The three qualities hold people in attachment to Maya. But the Gurmukh attains the fourth state of higher consciousness — the one that is beyond all three.

Granting His Grace, God unites us with Himself. The Name comes to dwell in the mind.

Those who have the treasure of goodness within them — they have found what was hidden in plain sight.

The fourth state is not better goodness — it is what lies beyond all three qualities entirely.
The deeper layer

The chautha paad (fourth state) — turiya — appears here as a distinct teaching. Beyond the three qualities of nature (sattva, rajas, tamas) is a fourth state that transcends all three. This is not a quality but the absence of the binding quality of all three.

Turiya is consciousness aware of itself as consciousness — not consciousness absorbed in content. The Gurmukh, through grace, attains this state. It is not achieved through the cultivation of sattva (the quality of goodness and clarity) — it is the state that lies on the other side of all three.

A Question to Sit With

Can you imagine a state of awareness that doesn't depend on how good you feel, how active you are, or how calm the circumstances are? What would that be like?
