In plain words

Those who do not serve the True Teacher are miserable throughout all four ages — the entire span of time.

They wander through countless reincarnations. Without the Name, they find no peace.

The suffering is not new. It has been going on as long as the forgetting has been going on.

The suffering of the separated soul is ancient — it has no beginning that can be found, only an end that grace provides.
The deeper layer

The chaar jugas (four ages) — Sat Yug, Treta Yug, Dwapar Yug, and Kali Yug — represent the totality of cosmic time in the Hindu and Sikh picture of the universe. To say someone has been miserable through all four ages is to say their suffering has no beginning that can be identified — it has been the condition of the ego-bound soul through all of time.

This is not meant to depress but to diagnose: the suffering is not new, not particular to this lifetime, not a result of this life's mistakes. It is structural — the structure of ego-separation. And structural problems require structural solutions.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a pattern in your life that seems to repeat regardless of circumstances — a recurring difficulty or tendency? Does it feel like it has always been there? What do you think it's rooted in?
