Sikhism·Siree Raag·Shabad 52
Verse 5 of 6

Without Faith, Consumed by Duality

satgur sayv man nirmalaa ha-umai taj vikaar.
Serving the True Guru, the mind becomes immaculate and pure; egotism and corruption are discarded.
aap chhod jeevat marai gur kai sabad veechaar.
So abandon your selfishness, and remain dead while yet alive. Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
DhanDhaa Dhaavat reh ga-ay laagaa saach pi-aar.
The pursuit of worldly affairs comes to an end, when you embrace love for the True One.
sach ratay mukh ujlay tit saachai darbaar. ||4||
Those who are attuned to Truth-their faces are radiant in the Court of the True Lord. ||4||

In plain words

Without faith, they are consumed by the love of duality. The self-willed do not act on the Guru's instructions.

Night and day, they are filled with anxiety. Deep within, they suffer in pain.

O Nanak, chanting the Name of the True Lord — the Gurmukh is liberated in this very life.

Liberation in this very life is available — not in a future incarnation, not after death. Now.
The deeper layer

The closing pauri contrasts the faithless (bibaak) with the Gurmukh who chants the Name. The faithless are consumed by duality — dujaa bhaav jalae — burned by the competing pulls of what they cannot resolve into unity.

"Liberated in this very life" — jivanmukt — this is the Sikh teaching on liberation: it is available now, in this body, in this lifetime. Not after death, not in a future incarnation, not after enlightenment granted by a particular institution. Now.

A Question to Sit With

If liberation — freedom from the compulsive grip of ego and fear — were available right now, not someday, what would you do with this moment?
