Remain Dead While Alive

ha-umai kartaa jag mu-aa gur bin ghor anDhaar.
Engrossed in egotism, the world perishes. Without the Guru, there is utter darkness.
maa-i-aa mohi visaari-aa sukh-daata daataar.
In emotional attachment to Maya, they have forgotten the Great Giver, the Giver of Peace.
satgur sayveh taa ubreh sach rakheh ur Dhaar.
Those who serve the True Guru are saved; they keep the True One enshrined in their hearts.
kirpaa tay har paa-ee-ai sach sabad veechaar. ||3||
By His Grace, we find the Lord, and reflect on the True Word of the Shabad. ||3||

In plain words

Remain dead while alive — and after you are dead, you will live forever.

Through the Word of the Guru's teaching, subdue your egotism. And then find the Door of Liberation.

The ego dies first — in this lifetime, through practice. What comes after that death is what cannot die.

Die to the ego while living — and discover that what remains is what could never die.
The deeper layer

Jeevat marat rahae — remain dead (to the ego) while alive. Then mar jeevai — after dying (to the ego), live permanently. This is the core of the jeevat marnaa teaching.

The Door of Liberation (mukti darvaajaa) is found through this death. And it is found while living, not after biological death. The liberation available in this lifetime is not a preview — it is the actual thing. Biological death then is simply a transition, not an end, for the one who has already died the meaningful death.

A Question to Sit With

What part of you do you most protect and defend? What would your life look like if you held that part more lightly — not abandoned it, but weren't enslaved to protecting it?
