Verse 3 of 5

God Joins Those Fascinated with the Shabad

ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪੇ ਲਏ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥
sachai sabad man mohi-aa parabh aapay la-ay milaa-ay.
God joins to Himself those whose minds are fascinated with the True Word of His Shabad.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੇ ਰਤਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥
an-din naamay rati-aa jotee jot samaa-ay.
Night and day, they are attuned to the Naam, and their light is absorbed into the Light.
Through His Light, God is revealed. Without the True Guru, understanding is not obtained.
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਆਇ ॥੨॥
jin ka-o poorab likhi-aa satgur bhayti-aa tin aa-ay. ||2||
The True Guru comes to meet those who have such pre-ordained destiny. ||2||

In plain words

God Himself brings close those whose minds are charmed by the True Word.

Night and day they are tuned to the Name, and their light melts into the Light.

Through His Light, God is seen. Without the True Guru, no one understands.

The True Guru comes to meet those for whom it was written from the start.

Genuine fascination with the Shabad attracts the divine — because the divine is already what the Shabad is pointing at.
The deeper layer

This verse says that when our heart is truly charmed by the Word, God Himself pulls us close.

Sachai sabad man mohi-aa — the mind is charmed, held, by the True Word. Parabh aapay la-ay milaa-ay — God Himself joins such people to Himself. Think of fabric dipped in dye. It is not just touched by the color. It is soaked in it. Gurbani calls this rang, being colored through and through.

An-din naamay rati-aa jotee jot samaa-ay — soaked in the Name day and night, their light melts into the Light.

Jotee hoo parabh jaapdaa — God is seen through His own Light. The Creator is already present in everything He made. People soaked in the Word are not finding something new. They are seeing the One where He has always been.

Think of wearing glasses for the first time. The leaves on the trees were always sharp and clear. The glasses just let you see them. The Word is like those glasses.

Bin satgur boojh na paa-ay — without the True Guru, this understanding does not come. Jin ka-o poorab likhi-aa satgur bhayti-aa tin aa-ay — the True Guru comes to meet those for whom it was written. And real interest can't be forced. When you are truly drawn in, the door opens.

A Question to Sit With

What are you most genuinely fascinated by — not what you think you should be interested in, but what actually captures your attention without effort? What does that fascination reveal about you?
