Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Without the Guru, the sickness is not cured, and the pain of ego does not go away.
By the Guru's grace, He comes to live in the mind, and one stays soaked in His Name.
Through the Guru's Word, the Lord is found. Without the Word, people wander, fooled by doubt.
This one says the ego is a sickness, and the Guru is the doctor who brings the cure.
Bin gur rog na tut-ee — without the Guru, the illness doesn't go. Ha-umai peerh na jaa-ay — the ache of ego doesn't leave. The ego is the me-first feeling, and here it is a sickness the whole world shares.
Guru Amar Das uses this doctor picture all through Siree Raag. The sickness is ego. The doctor is the Guru. The medicine is the Name. By the Guru's grace, the One comes to live in the mind, and we stay soaked in the Name.
The picture is kind. Sick people aren't bad people. They just need a doctor. Think of a flu going around a whole school. Nobody is blamed for catching it. Everyone just needs good care.
Gur sabdee har paa-ee-ai — through the Guru's Word, the One is found. Without the Word, people wander, fooled by doubt.
What would you tell a doctor about the 'symptoms' of your ego — how does it show up in your life? What does it do that causes you trouble?
