Sikhism·Siree Raag·Shabad 56
Verse 3 of 5

One Lord Alone Is the Giver

ਹਰਿ ਇਕੋ ਦਾਤਾ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
har iko daataa varatdaa doojaa avar na ko-ay.
The One Lord alone is the Giver, pervading everywhere. There is no other at all.
ਸਬਦਿ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sabad saalaahee man vasai sehjay hee sukh ho-ay.
Praise the Word of the Shabad, and He shall come to dwell in your mind; you shall be blessed with intuitive peace and poise.
ਸਭ ਨਦਰੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਵੇਖਦਾ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੨॥
sabh nadree andar vaykh-daa jai bhaavai tai day-ay. ||2||
Everything is within the Lord's Glance of Grace. As He wishes, He gives. ||2||

In plain words

The One Lord alone is the Giver, present everywhere. There is no other at all.

Praise the Word, and He will come to live in your mind. Then peace and calm come easily.

Everything is within His kind gaze. As He wishes, He gives.

One Lord is the Giver — everyone else, no matter how powerful, is also just a receiver.
The deeper layer

This one says there is only one Giver, and everything comes from Him.

Har iko daataa vartadaa — the One Lord is the Giver, present everywhere. Doojaa avar na ko-ay — there is no other at all.

This puts everyone on the same level. No priest, no king, no human teacher has the power to give on their own. They can pass things along, but they aren't the source. Think of a building with many taps. The water comes from one tank.

This is humbling, because no person holds the final power. It is also freeing. You don't need to chase powerful people to get what you truly need.

Sabad saalaahee man vasai — praise the Word, and He comes to live in the mind. Then peace comes, easily. Everything is within His kind gaze. As He wishes, He gives.

A Question to Sit With

Is there someone in your life you've been looking to for something that only a larger Source can actually provide? What are you asking of them that might be better directed elsewhere?
