Verse 3 of 5

The Manmukhs Do Not Recognize Their Husband Lord

manmukh kant na pachhaan-ee tin ki-o rain vihaa-ay.
The self-willed manmukhs do not recognize their Husband Lord; how will they spend their life-night?
garab atee-aa tarisnaa jaleh dukh paavahi doojai bhaa-ay.
Filled with arrogance, they burn with desire; they suffer in the pain of the love of duality.
sabad ratee-aa sohaaganee tin vichahu ha-umai jaa-ay.
The happy soul-brides are attuned to the Shabad; their egotism is eliminated from within.
sadaa pir raaveh aapnaa tinaa sukhay sukh vihaa-ay. ||2||
They enjoy their Husband Lord forever, and their life-night passes in the most blissful peace. ||2||

In plain words

The manmukhs do not recognize their Husband Lord. They wander around looking for Him in the wrong places.

They are trapped in the love of duality — seeking the Lord on the outside while He waits within.

Day after day, they waste their lives in suffering. Their search takes them everywhere but where He actually is.

The Husband dwells within — every outward search is an outward expression of the inward longing that has not yet turned in the right direction.
The deeper layer

The manmukh's tragedy: Kant na jaanai — she does not recognize her Husband Lord. And the recognition has failed because she is looking outward (bahar khoje) for what is within (antar vasai — He dwells within).

The outward seeking is not wrong in itself — all seeking is an expression of the real longing. But when the seeking stays only outward and never turns inward, it keeps circling the empty space left by the interior recognition it has not yet made.

A Question to Sit With

Is there something you've been seeking outside yourself that might actually require an inner turn? What would looking inward look like for that particular longing?
