Meditate on Him, O my soul — He is the Supreme Lord over kings and emperors.
Place the hopes of your mind in the One, in whom all have faith.
Give up all your clever tricks, and grasp the Feet of the Guru.
This verse says: put your trust in the One who is greater than every king.
So-ee Dhi-aa-ee-ai jee-arhay sir saahaan paatisaahu — O my soul, keep your mind on Him. He is the King over all kings and emperors.
In Guru Arjan's time, the Mughal emperor sat at the top of a huge ladder of rulers. Guru Arjan places the One above all of them. What kings are supposed to do for their people, like protecting, providing and honoring, the One truly does.
Tis hee kee kar aas man jis kaa sabhas vaysaahu — put your mind's hopes in the One whom everyone trusts. Even people who don't think about it lean on the same ground. Think of the floor under your feet. You rarely notice it, but you trust it with every step. The One is like that for every being.
Sabh si-aanpaa chhad kai gur kee charnee paahu — give up all your clever tricks and hold on to the Guru's feet. Being clever can't save us. Holding on, with trust and humility, is what keeps us safe.
Who or what do you most fundamentally trust — not as a theological position, but in the actual structure of your daily life? What do you depend on most?
