In plain words

The One is the Knower of all beings. He alone is our Savior.

The One is the Support of the mind. The One is the Support of the breath of life.

In His Sanctuary there is eternal peace. He is the Supreme Lord God, the Creator.

The One is the Support of mind and breath alike — the same One holds both the thinking and the living.
The deeper layer

Guru Arjan's theology of the One: Ik appears five or more times in each of his compositions as the governing word. The One Knower (sarbagya), the One Savior, the One Support of mind, the One Support of breath — the One is not just the name for the divine. It is the description of the fundamental structure of reality.

Amrit shaanti (eternal peace) in His Sanctuary. Not conditional peace, not peace-when-circumstances-are-good. Amrit (ambrosial, immortal) peace. The quality of the peace in His Sanctuary is the quality of the divine itself: not temporary, not earned, not maintained. Simply present.

A Question to Sit With

Do you experience your thinking and your breathing as connected — as expressions of the same underlying life? What would it mean to recognize both as the One's support?
