Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The palace of the Lord God is so beautiful. Inside are gems, rubies, pearls and clear diamonds. A fort of gold stands around this source of sweet nectar.
How can I climb up to the fort without a ladder? I keep the Lord in mind, through the Guru, and I am blessed and lifted up.
Guru Nanak describes the One's home as a beautiful palace full of jewels, and asks how anyone can climb up to it.
Prabh harmandar sohnaa means the Lord's palace is so beautiful. It is a royal picture, the finest court anyone could imagine. But the rubies and pearls are inside us. They are the treasures of a clear mind, of love, and of truth.
Bin pa-orhee garh ki-o charha-o means how can I climb the fort without a ladder? It is a real question, asked honestly. Think of a treehouse with no ladder. You can see it, but you cannot get up.
The answer comes in the next verse: the Guru is the ladder, the boat, and the raft. The way in is through the teaching, through lining up with truth, and through grace.
Have you ever discovered something valuable about yourself that surprised you? A quality or strength you didn't know was there?
