The Essence of All Wisdom Is to Gather the Merits of the Naam
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The essence of all wisdom is to gather the merits of the Naam.
Devoted to the Lord's humble servant, one obtains the glorious greatness of the Naam.
The one who has served God is an emperor among kings, and great is that person's glory.
The triple essence claim completes: the essence of scriptures, the essence of meditation, the essence of wisdom — all point to the Naam. Guru Arjan makes a comprehensive argument: look for the core of any genuine spiritual discipline and you will find the Naam.
"Emperor among kings" — paatisaahi paatisaah — the one who has served God ranks above all earthly kings. This is the reversal: the world's hierarchy has the emperor at the top. In the divine's hierarchy, the servant of the Lord is above all emperors.
"Devoted to the Lord's humble servant" — the double-servant: devoted not even directly to the Lord but to the Lord's servant. The chain of devotion.
Who are the people in your life who serve quietly, without recognition — who would be 'emperors' in this counting? Do you recognize them? What do they have?
