Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The True Guru is the deep, deep Ocean of Peace, who washes away wrongdoing.
Those who serve their Guru are not punished by the Messenger of Death.
No one can compare with the Guru. I have searched the whole universe.
The True Guru has given the treasure of the Name. O Nanak, the mind is filled with peace.
This closing verse says the Guru is a deep ocean of peace, and whoever serves the Guru is free, here and beyond.
Satgur gahir gabheer hai sukh saagar — the True Guru is deep, deep, an ocean of peace. Agh-khand — the one who breaks the power of wrongdoing.
Jin gur sayvi-aa aapnaa jamdoot na laagai dand — those who serve their Guru are not punished by the jamdoot, the Messenger of Death. That fear no longer holds them.
This completes the song. The last verse named the Guru as the holy place, the boat and the one who washes us clean. Here we see what happens to people who found the Guru. They gain good qualities. Their deeds shine. The Name is like jewels they wear.
And that freedom is not only for after this life. It starts now, in this world. Think of a kid who used to be scared of the dark and finally isn't. They don't have to wait for anything. They are free tonight.
Gur naal tul na lag-ee khoj dithaa barahmand — no one compares with the Guru. I have searched the whole universe. Naam niDhaan satgur dee-aa sukh naanak man meh mand — the True Guru gave the treasure of the Name, and Nanak's mind is full of peace. The song began with meeting the Saints. It ends here, in peace.
What does liberation feel like to you — not as a final destination but as a quality that can be present now? Have you tasted it? What was it like?
