Go and ask the happy soul-brides. "What good ways help you enjoy your Husband Lord?"
They say, "We wear calm and ease. We wear contentment and sweet words.
We meet our Beloved, the Source of Joy, when we listen to the Guru's Word."
This verse says: if you want to know how to be close to the One, go ask the people who already are.
Jaa-ay puchhahu sohaaganee — go and ask the happy brides, the ones who feel loved by their Husband Lord. Guru Nanak does not send us to a distant expert. He sends us to friends in the community who have found what we are looking for.
Their answer is a list of three things they "wear" like jewelry. Sahj is calm, easy peace. Santokh is contentment, feeling that you have enough. Mithaa bolnee is speaking sweetly.
These are not tickets you must buy before you can meet the Beloved. They grow naturally once you are close. Pir reesaaloo taa milai jaa gur kaa sabad sunee — we meet the Beloved, the Source of Joy, when we listen to the Guru's Word.
Think of asking the kindest kid in your class how they stay so patient. They might just say, "I listen to my grandma." The good qualities come from the listening.
Is there someone in your life who seems to have figured something out that you're still working on? Have you ever asked them how?
