Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Meeting the True One, truth rises up inside. The truthful melt into the True Lord.
Through the Guru's Word, filled with deep respect for God, you gain understanding and are welcomed with honor.
O Nanak, the True King brings us into Himself.
This closing verse says that when you meet what is true, more truth grows in you.
Sach milai sach oopjai — meeting the True One, truth rises up. Sach meh saach samaa-ay — the truthful melt into the True One.
Think of one candle lighting another. The first flame is not used up. Now there are two, and the room is brighter. People who are honest and real bring out honesty in each other. That is how a good community works.
Surat hovai pat oogvai — understanding comes, and honor follows. Gurbachnee bha-o khaa-ay — this happens through the Guru's Word, with bha-o, a deep respect and awe for the One.
"Melting into the True One" comes up often in Gurbani. It means the lonely, walled-off feeling of ha-umai, the ego, softens away. It is not an ending. It is finding out what was true all along: we were never really separate. Naanak sachaa paatisaahu aapay la-ay milaa-ay — Nanak says the True King Himself brings us close.
Have you ever felt more honest or more real around certain people? What is it about them that brings that out?
