Chitr and Gupt, the angels of the conscious and the subconscious who keep the record of actions, and the Righteous Judge of Dharma who reads this record, sing of You.
That True Lord is True, forever True, and True is His Name.
He is, and shall always be. He shall not depart, even when this Universe which He has created departs.
rangee rangee bhaatee kar kar jinsee maa-i-aa jin upaa-ee.
He created the world, with its various colors, species of beings, and the variety of Maya.
kar kar daykhai keetaa aapnaa ji-o tis dee vadi-aa-ee.
Having created the creation, He watches over it Himself, by His Greatness.
jo tis bhaavai so-ee karsee fir hukam na karnaa jaa-ee.
He does whatever He pleases. No one can issue any order to Him.
so paatisaahu saahaa patisaahib naanak rahan rajaa-ee. ||1||
He is the King, the King of kings, the Supreme Lord and Master of kings. Nanak remains subject to His Will. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
Where is the door to the oneness? Where is the home where all of it lives and takes care of everything?
The answer comes as the question opens: everywhere. The wind sings. Water sings. Fire sings. The ones who keep the cosmic record sing. Shiva sings. Brahma sings. Indra on his throne sings. The yogis deep in meditation sing. The scholars, the warriors, the galaxies — all of them are already singing, in every tradition, in every language, in every way they know how.
And the oneness? It was here before anything began. It will be here after everything has gone. It made this world in all its dazzling colors and variety, and it watches over every bit of it — not from a distance, but from inside it. Whatever it wants to happen, happens. No one can issue it orders.
Nanak simply remains in its flow.
The door you're looking for is everywhere — the whole universe is already singing at it.
The deeper layer
So Dar opens the body of the Guru Granth Sahib immediately after Japji Sahib, and it does something remarkable: it answers Japji's question about the oneness by pointing at everything. The list of singers is deliberately all-inclusive — beings from Hindu, yogic, Buddhist, and Vedic traditions are all present. No one is left out. The oneness does not belong to one tradition; every tradition is already singing at its door.
Notice the structure of the long shabad: it begins with a question (where is that door?) and never really answers with a location. Instead, it lists everything that is already at the door — the entire created universe. The teaching embedded in the form: you are not looking for a door. You are already inside.
Maya appears near the end — the world created in "various colors and species." Maya is not illusion in the sense of being fake. It is the veil of variety that makes us forget the oneness behind it all. The oneness created it, watches over it, and remains unchanged by it.
A Question to Sit With
Can you think of a moment when you felt like everything around you was somehow connected — like the world had a kind of aliveness to it? What were you doing when that happened?
