Sikhism·So Dar·So Dar, Shabad 1
Verse 5 of 6

All Powers Flow from Grace, Not from the Self

ਸਭਿ ਸਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਪ ਸਭਿ ਚੰਗਿਆਈਆ ॥
sabh sat sabh tap sabh chang-aa-ee-aa.
All Truth, all austere discipline, all goodness,
ਸਿਧਾ ਪੁਰਖਾ ਕੀਆ ਵਡਿਆਈਆ ॥
siDhaa purkhaa kee-aa vadi-aa-ee-aa.
all the great miraculous spiritual powers of the Siddhas
ਤੁਧੁ ਵਿਣੁ ਸਿਧੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਈਆ ॥
tuDh vin siDhee kinai na paa-ee-aa.
-without You, no one has attained such powers.
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਈਆ ॥੩॥
karam milai naahee thaak rahaa-ee-aa. ||3||
They are received only by Your Grace. No one can block them or stop their flow. ||3||

In plain words

Every great power anyone has ever had — the ability to be completely truthful, the capacity to love without limit, every miracle, every miraculous gift of the Siddhas — none of it came from the person who had it.

It came through them. From the source. By grace.

You cannot earn it. You cannot force it. And once it flows, nothing can stop it.

Every great power anyone has ever had — it came from the source, not from the self.
The deeper layer

This is a radical equalizer. The Siddhas were legendary masters — human beings who had developed extraordinary powers through lifelong discipline. Guru Nanak is not dismissing their achievement. He is saying their achievement was not theirs. It flowed through them from the source.

This connects directly to Gurprasad (grace) from the philosophy of this project. Grace is not a reward for accumulating enough virtue. It flows — like a river that was already moving before you arrived at the bank. What discipline does is clear away the obstructions. But the river was always there.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of a time when something came through you that felt bigger than you — something you said or did that surprised even yourself? Where do you think that came from?
