Sukhmani Sahib
Commentary

Raag Gauree Sukhmani, Ashtapadee 23, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

The ointment of wisdom - and what the healed eyes see everywhere.

The Arc

The salok applies the giaan anjan - the healing ointment of wisdom - and the darkness clears: nothing needed to change but the eyes. P1 reports the first discovery: God deep within one's own being; the nine treasures, the deepest Samaadhi and the unstruck music all housed in this very body - with the company of the good as the guide to one's own floor plan. P2 pans the full geography - earth, ethers, deeps, forests, winds, waters - under one caption: without Him, there is no place at all. P3 holds two treasury-lines: underneath every voice, His Word; in all light, His Light - and the universe as fabric on His loom. P4 paints the completed perception's ethics: everything God, therefore everything Dharma; whatever happens, received in peace downstream of trust. P5 asks the question that retires all proximity-hierarchies: who is near, and who is far? P6 crosses the last frontier - through all eyes, He is watching; all creation is His body; every kirtan, the One singing to the One. P7 says the hardest sentence, earned at last: if it comes from Him, it cannot be bad - grief in the universe, no malice at its root. P8 confers the honors and defines a justified life: in this person's company, the Name comes to mind - freed themselves, they free the universe.

Key Vocabulary

  • giaan anjan - the ointment of wisdom (salok).
  • nav nidh / anhad naad - the nine treasures; the unstruck sound (P1).
  • tis bin naahee thaa-o - without Him, no place at all (P2).
  • sabh meh jot - in all light, His Light (P3); the Aartee's line.
  • sant kai nayn / sabh dharam - in the Saint's eye, all God; in the heart, all Dharma (P4).
  • kavan nikat kavan door - who is near, who is far? (P5).
  • sagal samagree tan - all creation, His body (P6).
  • tis tay buraa na ho-ay - from Him, nothing bad (P7).
  • aap mukat, mukat karai sansaar - freed, and freeing the universe (P8).

Themes and Cross-Connections

This is Sukhmani's hymn of restored vision - the practical seeing that the twenty-first ashtapadee's metaphysics and the twenty-second's guarantees make possible. P1's inward address completes Aap Pachhaan (everything within the home of the self, B00C917) with the body named as the shrine. P3's in-all-light-His-Light joins the Aartee (Dhanaasaree) and the light-in-all of 15.2 - the project's Ik Onkar as optics. P5's near/far question dissolves proximity-religion at the root, twin to the houses-and-names of 9.8. P6's through-all-eyes teaching grounds the equal eye (22.1) as discovery rather than discipline. P7's hardest sentence is deliberately late-placed - the bani's own pastoral sequencing - and pairs with the sweet-Will of 14.8. P8's purpose-line (in his company, the Name comes to mind) is the tradition's most compact answer to what a life is for, and closes the bani's social physics: no private liberation anywhere in twenty-three hymns.

Translation Notes

  • Salok: giaan anjan gur dee-aa - the ointment-image is medical and literal (anjan: collyrium, eye-salve); SSK's "healing ointment of spiritual wisdom" is exact.
  • P3: sabh meh jot jot hai so-ay is the line sung nightly in Aartee; the Deeper Layer flags the liturgical home so the family recognizes it.
  • P7: tis tay buraa na ho-ay - SSK: "If it comes from Him, it cannot be bad." The rendering is faithful; the commentary preserves the pastoral placement - this sentence is the fruit of trust, never a stick for fresh grief.

For Raag Gauree

Gauree's twenty-third movement is the raag's ophthalmology: one application of the ointment, and the discipline's whole curriculum - place, light, speech, eyes, events - re-reads as a single Presence. The raag that began Sukhmani washing minds ends it healing eyes; what remains for the final hymn is only the celebration.
