Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Wisdom came like a healing ointment for my eyes - and the old darkness cleared.
By grace I met the good - and my mind filled with light.
Wisdom works like medicine for the eyes. Once the eyes heal, a world that looked dark turns out to be full of light.
This short verse, a salok, opens a new section of Sukhmani Sahib. Its picture is a healing cream. Gi-aan anjan gur dee-aa — the Guru gave the ointment of wisdom. Gi-aan means wisdom, and anjan is a soothing cream put on sore eyes. Agi-aan anDhayr binaas — the darkness of not-knowing is gone.
Think of putting on glasses for the first time. The whiteboard was never blurry. Your eyes were. The blindness was never in the world. It was in the seeing.
The rest of this section is a record of what healed eyes find. The One deep within. The One in the earth and the sky. The One in every light. The One in whatever happens. It is Sukhmani's song of sight given back. And its big discovery is simple: nothing needed to change except the eyes.
Have you ever had something explained, and suddenly the same old scene looked completely different? What actually changed?
