Sukhmani Sahib
Commentary

Raag Gauree Sukhmani, Ashtapadee 7, Mehl 5 (Guru Arjan)

The longest praise of good company in the Guru Granth Sahib - and its boldest last line.

The Arc

The salok poses the paradox: the One is unapproachable, yet speaking of Him liberates - and the bridge is the saadh, the Holy. Eight pauris then open nearly every line with saadh kai sang - "in the Company of the Holy" - the most sustained anaphora in the bani. P1: the observable effects - radiant face, washed mind, thinned ego, settled quarrels. P2: regulation - the five passions rested, the wandering mind steadied, Maya released. P3: perception healed - enemies become friends, no one seems evil, the fever of ego breaks. P4: the two paradoxes - grasping the Incomprehensible, bearing the unbearable. P5: the widening circle - family redeemed, wealth that multiplies by sharing, Dharam Raa-ay turned servant. P6: hospitality - no one goes empty-handed; the separated reunited; salvation by listening. P7: practices planted in the Sangat's soil - duty becomes sweetness, obedience becomes flow. P8: the bare claim - beyond the Vedas, beyond the three qualities, no difference between the Holy and God.

Key Vocabulary

  • saadh / saadhsang - the Holy; the Company of the Holy - one who has disciplined (saadh-ed) the self; the gathering of such.
  • agam agochar - unapproachable, unfathomable (salok).
  • haumai rog / jvar - ego as disease and fever (P3).
  • Dharam Raa-ay - the Righteous Judge of deeds, become a servant in the Sangat (P5).
  • birthaa ko-ay na jaa-ay - no one goes empty-handed (P6).
  • aagiaakaaree - lit. obedient; alignment with Hukam as flow, not command (P7).
  • trai gun tay parey - beyond the three qualities (P8); the fourth state.
  • bhayd na - no difference (P8); the identity of the dissolved soul and the One.

Themes and Cross-Connections

This ashtapadee is the structural heart of Sukhmani's social teaching: what austerity could not do (Asht. 3) and gratitude prepares (Asht. 4, 6), company completes. It gives Sat Sangat (philosophy.md) its fullest text: goodness caught by proximity, sorrow divided among many hands, wealth that multiplies when shared. The perceptual sequence of P3 (enemies to friends because the seer is healed) matches Sukhmani 3.6 and Aasaa's world-mirrors-the-heart. P8's no-difference claim joins the project's deepest line-cluster: aatam cheeni-aa parmaatam so-ee (B00C909), "of the same color" (B00C808), and Japji's jinee naam dhiaa-i-aa closing - the dissolved self as the One's own presence. The Vedas-only-report line extends Har Ras (tasting versus reading about).

Translation Notes

  • saadh is rendered by SSK as "the Holy" - in Gurmukhi it is not an institutional title but "one who has accomplished the discipline" (of the self). The children's sections use "good company / the good-hearted ones" to keep it a quality anyone can approach, not a rank.
  • P8: SSK renders the final line "there is no difference between the Holy people and God" - the Gurmukhi bhayd na bhaa-ee addresses the listener as "O brother/sibling" (bhaa-ee), keeping even the boldest metaphysical claim inside the warmth of address among friends, as the salok began (sunhu meet).

For Raag Gauree

Gauree, the raag of method, here names the method that contains all methods: keep the company of the good. Everything the raag's severity demands - the washed mind, the stilled five, the broken fever - is delivered in this hymn as a side effect of sitting in the right room.
