Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Those who truly know the One carry a glow - and their teaching sets the whole world free.
Such servants rescue everyone they touch; sorrows are forgotten around them.
Mercy draws them in and joins them to Himself; singing wisdom's Word, they overflow.
Serving such souls is itself a rare gift, granted by fortune. The ones who keep the Name find the resting place - honor them as the noblest there are.
Someone who truly knows the One spills help and comfort onto everyone around them.
Jin parabh jaataa so sobhaavant — those who know God shine. Sagal sansaar udhrai tin mant — the whole world is lifted by their teaching. Knowing the One is never kept just for yourself. It overflows. Think of a glass under a running tap. Once it is full, it spills onto everything nearby. Ashtapadee 8 pictured the same thing as a tower sending out a signal.
The tenderest line is this. Parabh kay sayvak dookh bisaaran — the One's servants make sorrows be forgotten. Not argued away, not fixed, but forgotten. It is the way a child forgets a scraped knee when a beloved grandparent walks in. Their presence is bigger than the pain.
See also what is called lucky here. Un kee sayvaa so-ee laagai — the one who gets to serve such people is the one blessed with great fortune. Being near great souls is itself a gift of grace. Ashtapadee 7 spoke the same way about the Sangat, the holy company.
Naanak tin purakh ka-o ootam kar maan — honor such people as the noblest. Gurbani ranks nobility by one thing only: how deeply a person remembers the One.
Who makes your worries shrink just by walking into the room? What do they carry that does that?
