Beyond and Inside All, Findable in Good Company
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
He is beyond all relationship - and inside every relationship - both, Himself.
Flashing His power, He has the whole world fascinated. He sets His own play rolling, and He alone can price it.
There is none other than Him - permeating all things, He is One: through and through, in every form, in every color.
And where does He let Himself be seen? In the company of the good. Having made the creation, He filled it with His own power. To Him - over and over and over - I offer myself.
The One is beyond everything and inside everything, and can be found in good company.
Nirgun aap sargun bhee ohee. Nirgun means beyond all qualities: no shape, no color, no ties. Sargun means with qualities: present in every shape, every color, every relationship. The verse says the One is both, Himself.
People over the centuries have argued about which of these God truly is. Gurbani's answer is: both. The ocean and its waves were never two rivals. Sukhmani has said this before too: the One and the many, the unseen and the seen.
The most practical line comes near the end. Where is this One actually seen? Bha-ay pargaas saaDh kai sang — He shines out in the company of the holy. Not first in big ideas, and not in brave feats done alone. In people gathered together.
So these eight verses about the True Guru end by handing us the Guru's address: the Sangat, the gathering of good people. There the One beyond everything keeps a lamp lit and sits among friends. And this part of Sukhmani closes by showing what a Guru truly is: the one through whom the hidden One becomes seen by all.
If the invisible One wanted to be seen, and chose people to shine through - who has He been shining through, near you?
