Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The servant's wishes come true; the true teaching arrives from the True Guru.
Kindness is shown; a lasting gladness is given. The ropes are cut - free.
The pains of coming and going, and the old fog of doubt - gone. Desires satisfied; trust fully honored.
Soaked forever in the peace that fills everything. He is His - merged, one with the One. Absorbed in loving the Name.
Everything the servant hoped for comes true, and trust held through a long wait is honored in full.
The verse reads like the happy ending after a lifetime's long wait. Wishes come true. Teaching is received. Kindness is shown. Happiness is made lasting. Bandhan kaat mukat jan bha-i-aa — the ropes are cut, and the servant is set free. Pain and doubt are gone. Desires are satisfied. Trust is rewarded. Union is given.
Each line closes a worry Sukhmani raised earlier. There was the rope around the neck in Ashtapadee 19. There was the fog of doubt in Ashtapadee 18. There were the wants that never stopped in Ashtapadee 12. Think of a checklist where, one by one, every box gets ticked.
Two lines carry the most weight. Ichh punee sardhaa sabh pooree — wishes are fulfilled, and sardhaa, trust, is fully rewarded. Trust held on through a long silence is honored to the last coin. Every believer waits for this, and here it is, already done.
Jis kaa saa tin lee-aa milaa-ay — He took back the one who was His own. Belonging and becoming one happen in one breath. Belonging grows so complete that it becomes oneness. Ashtapadee 11 called this water poured into water.
Have you ever trusted something for a long time before it came true? What did the waiting do to you?
