The Last Class Is Review: Breathe the Name and Bow
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Listen to the complete teaching - and see the Highest One near you, right there.
Remember the Life of the World with every breath, and the anxiety inside dissolves on its own.
Let the waves of little wantings pass; ask instead for the dust of the feet of the good. Set down the me-and-mine, and simply pray.
In the company of the good, cross the ocean of fire. Fill your storehouse with the one wealth. And bow - to the Perfect Guide.
This one is the whole course of Sukhmani in one verse, like a review day at the end of school.
Look at the list. Listen to the Guru's teaching. This is suniai, deep listening, the first door. See the Highest One near you, as an earlier song promised. Remember with every breath: saas saas simrahu gobind, with each breath remember the One.
Let the waves of wanting pass. Tarang means waves. Our wants are like choppy waves on top of a deep ocean. You do not fight them. You just do not climb aboard. Ask for the dust of the feet of the good, a picture of deep humility. Set down the me-and-mine. Pray. Cross the ocean of fire in good company. Fill your storehouse. Bow.
That is ten instructions, and not one is new. That is on purpose. The salok just drummed the word "complete." Here the course is complete too. Nothing new is left to teach, so the last class is review.
The agan saagar, the ocean of fire, is the world burning with wanting and fear. An earlier song felt that heat. Here it has grown into a whole sea. How do you cross it? Not by swimming hard on your own. You cross it the way Sukhmani always says: in the boat of the Sangat, the company of good people.
If you had to teach a younger child the whole of what keeps a heart at peace, in ten short instructions, what would they be?
