One Thing Carries the Soul That Carries Everything
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Happiness, deep calm, poise and bliss - they gather where the good gather to remember the One of highest joy.
Save your soul from the burning places - drink the deathless essence of His praise.
Rest your awareness on the One who fills everything: one Form, wearing countless appearances. Sustainer of the universe, Lord of the world, kind to the poor, destroyer of sorrow, perfectly merciful.
Remember, remember, remember the Name - it is what the soul stands on.
This one says the Name is what your soul stands on.
The first line gathers Sukhmani's words for peace. Sukh is comfort. Sahaj is easy, steady calm. Anand is bliss, deep joy. Where are they found? Once more, in the Saadh Sangat, the company of the good. There people remember the One who is parmaanand, joy at its source. This is joy from the spring itself, not its echo.
Then comes a list of the One's names. Each one has carried a whole song earlier in Sukhmani. Sustainer of the world. Kind to the poor, deen da-i-aal, the One who mends and looks after. Destroyer of sorrow, dukh bhanjan. Perfectly merciful.
The last line is the simplest of all. The Name is the aDhaar of the soul, the thing it stands on. Sukhmani has used many pictures for the Name: a necklace, money to trade with, medicine, a lamp, a boat, a pillar. The last picture is the plainest: the ground under your feet.
Your soul holds up everything else in your life. One thing holds up the soul itself.
What do you stand on when everything else shakes - and is it strong enough to hold a soul?
