The Holiest Place Is a Heart Where the Name Lives
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Of all religions, the best religion: keep the Name in your heart, and keep your conduct clean.
Of all ceremonies, the finest ceremony: let the Sangat rinse the grime off your mind.
Of all efforts, the best effort: hold the Name in your heart, always. Of all speech, the sweetest speech: hear the praise of the One and pass it on with your own tongue.
And Nanak says: of all places, the most sacred place is the heart in which the Name of the One has come to live.
The holiest place is a heart where the Name lives.
The verse gives five "bests": the best religion, the best ritual, the best effort, the best speech, and the best place. Each answer moves inward.
Religion is the Name plus good living. Har ko naam jap nirmal karam — remember the Name, and keep your actions clean. Nirmal karam means pure action. The two are tied together. Devotion without kindness is not enough. Kindness without depth is not enough either.
Ritual stays, but it becomes the mind being washed clean in the Sangat.
The last "best" finishes what this whole song has been saying. Earlier verses weighed shrines, rivers, and holy places, and found they could not wash the mind. Now the verse names the finest place of all: jih ghat vasai har naam, the heart where the One's Name lives. Think of searching the whole map for treasure, and finding it in your own pocket. The place was never on any map. It is you.
If the most sacred place is a heart that remembers, how should you treat the people around you - each one a possible shrine?
